Fayetteville woman uses YouTube to support independent brands

A local content creator has found her place in beauty brushes and color palettes by producing makeup tutorials on YouTube.

Amy Gallardo, 24, who lives in Fayetteville, discovered her love of makeup on YouTube before starting her own channel.

“I haven’t really had a lot of women in my life who wore a ton of makeup or were really excited about it,” she said. “So when YouTube first started, like it started out, I just remember finding tutorials and just being obsessed.”

Gallardo, originally from Florida, has been making makeup tutorial videos regularly on his channel, Amy Loves Makeup, for about five years. She has gained over 36,000 subscribers.

She first started with the low-cost cosmetics brand Wet n ‘Wild because she said it was what she could afford at the time. Now, she said, one of her top favorite brands is Terra Moons cosmetics.

Her channel focuses on independent makeup brands like Terra Moons rather than big cosmetic brands.

“It started out as something that I was really excited about – being able to support small businesses and having brand owners reach out to me and say, ‘You made a difference in my life and my brand,’” she said. said, “I saw that it was really rewarding, and I realized I needed to have a little more of a niche, something that sets me apart in the beauty community because there is so many content creators. ”

YouTube as a job

YouTube served as the platform that helped Gallardo be his own boss. Being a content creator is her main source of income and she advises others looking to be content creators about the importance of research.

“Do your research if you want to use (YouTube) to generate income,” she said. “The most important thing is to have multiple sources of income. So if you just rely on Youtube views, it’s not that much. There are a lot of different ways between referrals, affiliate links, to work for brands. ”

The same women in his life who weren’t too keen on makeup have been pushed into it more since Gallardo launched his channel.

“Almost anyone in my life, I’m like, ‘Do you need makeup?’ I have a lot of excess makeup (promotional items) and stuff so I always give it away, ”she said. “So I forced them a bit.”

Gallardo also has an Instagram account called @indiemakeupspotlight where she highlights some independent cosmetic brands. The account has gained over 50,000 subscribers.

Gallardo said his goal with his channel goes beyond views and subscribers.

“I try not to focus on the numbers or something like that because it’s just something that I don’t have control over,” she said. “All I can do is create the best content I can. Honestly, continue to be financially comfortable and just be able to be passionate about my job – I’m kinda here already, but it’s just my ongoing goal – just to keep doing a job where I am happy and where I feel I can make a difference to others. “
